Yeah I noticed that, but it was raining pretty hard, so I think that is just surface oxidation. Looking closely there wasn't any sign of pre-existing damage, the breaks are uniform and all the way across each bolt, no signs of earlier breaks at all. I think we most likely hit a curb and it sheared the wheel off, the bearing cap was the only other missing item. A loose lug would have caused a wobbly wheel and there would have been one or more lugs broken off at different locations, some longer than the others, these were all sheared off at the same point, flush with the hub or a 1/16" or so recessed, real different for sure! No damage to the fender or the rear tire, it left in a hurry!
A testament to the four nylon straps that held the truck, because the trailer ran over the wheel as it left, quite a jolt! It was strong enough to wake me up! It could have been a lot worse, proof positive that the proper size truck with a huge GCVR rating and dual rear wheels, gives a large margin of safety.
