I wonder if it wasn't a runaway situation. Maybe the tranny damage could be explained because it is a manual transmission and they tried to kill it by shoving it in gear, applying the brakes and dropping the clutch. It may have even worked to stop the engine, avoiding catastrophic engine failure, but with 600 lb-ft of torque and a little jerk, it was more than the tranny could handle. Of course it is all speculation, but if I were interested I would deffinately consider the drivetrain a complete loss.
