If you get a chance, take a tour of a B-17 or B-24 on the ground. We got to go through them at Boeing Field in Seattle when we were on vacation there two years ago.
Amazingly simple and tight inside. The aluminum skin felt like a beer can thickness. The crews really had guts to go on the missions they did.
