It is always better to crawl than to damage the under carriage or worse, the sheet metal, if you start bouncing off of stuff. You can always compensate for the low gears by up sizing the tires for fair on-hiway speed.
Rule of thumb: Serious off-roader, lowest gears you can find.
Graded Trail rider and hiway crusier, gears that will get you 65+ at about 2500 rpm.
