Thanks everyone. My 88' engine has a roller cam and maybe a change in the crank shaft as well? Who knows? Does anyone have a mid-60s 318 flywheel (172 tooth, thick center section) and is willing to measure the center opening. Mine is about 50 millimeters. The crank shaft flange receiver on my 88 engine is about 54 millimeters, 4 mm too wide.
