I think it is often more a factor of using the power at the wrong time in the wrong situation due to an inexperienced driver. I don't know what part breaks or if the pins are even at issue in those breaks, All I know is that when I witness such behaviour all you hear is a loud clunk in the victims rear axle......
Eaton lockers once had a 16 ga. sheet metal tab that was actuated by a spring, about the size of a ball point pen spring, the tab would shear off allowing the spiders to simply bind and snap the cast pin holders.
When torque is applied and it doesn't get to the ground, or gets to the ground in an erratic manner, the weakest link that carries that torque, is prone to breakage. One reason I am partial to ARB's is that there are no little plates, clutch discs, tabs, pins, small gears, or other lightweight items to break, burn, slip or smash. Simply a high strength metal collar that slips over the ends of each axle and effectively locks the axles together until the air is turned off.
