Engine dies

My '49 PW was running great until a few days ago. Now, when I slowly open the throttle, the engine dies. If I gun it, it's ok. Several months ago I rebuilt the carb, put in a new fuel pump and filter. I checked the timing and points. The idle mixture seems ok. I did notice some slop in the throttle shaft. Any ideas?
