I had a '78 Trailduster (boy do I miss that truck) and it was the same set up. Your transfer case puts 60% of the power to the rear wheels in open mode and 50/50 in lock mode. It can be converted to part time by adding an over running clutch setup. You can then put locking hubs on the front if you want. I never even thought about changing mine. It was so darn handy as it was. The front axle will have a slightly shorter gear ratio to keep the truck tracking straight and not over run the T-case. If you have 3.55 gears in the rear for instance, you'll have 3.54 in the front.
