When I see that problem that you describe, I most often find that it is contamination. First, I did not clean the area to welded well enough. Second, with these old trucks and metal I have found it impossible to weld some pieces. I try everything to adjust but nothing works. I then head for the scrap heap and pull out the same size pieces of metal and I can get a great weld. Ah, that tells me that the equipment and I are working OK. At one time I had some 1/4 stock that I could not weld on no matter what I did. I came down to that particular piece of metal had lots of contaminates in it. Even my friend who has years of welding experience ended up chucking that piece of metal out the door.
