What the numbers mean is for tax purposes and Motor Carrier Enforcement. EW stands for Empty weight and LW stands for Loaded weight. This is how they check to see if you are paying the proper license amount. LW 5000 would mean that truck 5 plates would be sufficient. However, if the truck weighs 4160 pounds, its empty weight should be 4100 not 3500. They were underpaying the tax man on road taxes. This works if you don't get caught but if you got weighed and had more than 900 pounds on the truck you got socked with an over stated weight penalty. In Indiana the lowest weight plate is truck 7 (7000 pounds)
