The Dana 70's have 1.5" diameter axleshafts, inner and outer, wich make them superior to even late model small spline 60's in stock trim. the 1.5" outer axle conversion for late model 35 spline 60's make the ultimate(?) light truck axles. The larger splines give up some strength to the small's because the diameter left over to the shaft is reduced by the depth of the splines.

They are all better choices than the ealier power wagon axles with about 1 1/4 " shafts, and I'm running those with 44"x18.5", albeit with a stock flathead. My advice to anybody playing with big tires off road is "bring spare axles and u-joints". Go prepared to fix it. the extra strain on the driveline will eventually break something...
