Yep, I should have thought to put it in gear THEN try to turn the crank......but it was after I checked the engine that I decided to play truck driver and shift through the gears....

Not being familiar with the configuration of the combustion chamber on these engines, it is possible that I wasn't actually contacting the piston. An air compressor I don't have, and I was turning the engine enough so that there would have been SOME movement of the pistons.

The pulley keyway on the shaft is an interesting idea. The engine turns quite easily and feels quite smooth. I've helped a friend with a broken crank in his race car, and the engine did not turn smoothly. I've pretzled a rod or two, and they didn't make the engine turn any smoother, either. A broken crank would seem unlikely, I hope, or I would think I'd read about it more often on these boards....actually not an easy thing to do; most engines will stall first (as we found out while using my BMW 2002 to pull the truck off the trailer and into the garage...)

Back to the grunge pit tonight.....such fun!
