You can run a 6 volt motor, especially a starter motor as they are rather robust to begin with, on 12 volts with no trouble at all. Just be sure to let it cool off before trying to restart the engine. It will run hotter but not anything to worry about. The windings are much heavier than 12 volts require. If you keep cranking, and cranking, and cranking, you'll burn it up but not otherwise.


You can also use a 6 volt horn as long as you don't hold the switch down for long periods of time. It's really loud when you do this though and you have to use a mechanical horn relay. I've never been able to get an electronic relay to kick the 6 volt horn over. I suspect the windings and resistance have something to do with it.
