This beautiful old iron battleship was scrapped after WWII. It was the poster child for the recycle and scrap drive during WWII. The citizens of Portland really thought scrapping it would win the war. So they 'donated' it to the US Government so we could make new ships, tanks and Power Wagons from it. Alas, as it was towed away from Portland's seawall, no one could have known it would be turned into an ammo barge and left to rot on some South Pacific island, to be scrapped years later. The mast, the only thing left, is on display in our Waterfront Park.
