Absolutely right! A class is always a good idea. At the minimum, buy or check out a vocational textbook on the subject, read all about theory and safety, and go through the exercises, using a pile of metal scrap of different alloys, shapes, and thicknesses. Read up on steel alloys and heat treatment. Learn what can be (or should be) welded and what can't. Break your welds apart to see how strong they are, what kind of penetration you're getting, where the failures are, etc. Following some simple, but consistent procedures will vastly improve the quality of your welding. The little instruction booklets that come with the welders are, while better than nothing, just enough to get you started on non-critical stuff. Before you weld any structural items, you should definitely do some studying and practicing to avoid any possible catastrophic failures.

Have fun,

Alan
