No apology required, but the thousands of nuances that influence the science make it very difficult at best to ascribe a particular event to a cause.
Unfortunate, today most science is goal or politically driven. When I was in school, in the 60's, the scientist were warning us of the inpending Ice Age, now many of these same scientist warn about global warming and drought. It is nearly ALL political, no science can take 200 years of recorded data and extrapolate back 10,000 years or forward 50. Our ability to measure has improved markedly in the last 30 years, our ability to know what it means, is infantile.
For example, ocean oil pollution: before offshore drilling in CA, the beaches here were always tar covered, now that there is some drilling, the oil in the under sea oil fields no longer seeps out under pressure, the beaches are now cleaner because of drilling, but let there be one spill and the know-nothings all start crying,"...end the drilling!" I wonder how many of them drive to the rallys?
In WWII, millions, if not 100's of millions, of gallons of oil and fuel were spilled when ships were sunk or damaged, oil today still seeps out of the Arizona, where is it today? The amount of oil then lost dwarfs the size of spills today, yet "scientist" and evironmentalists are out demanding an end to the drilling of oil every time there is a spill. Tankers are safer now than ever and so are drilling platforms, it is a false boogyman.
As for our Ozone question, thousands upon thousands of volcanos placed tons and tons of ozone and other polutants into our atmosphere in Eras past. One volcano the size of Mt. St. Helens puts more pollution into the air than years of driving vehicles, the planet seems to cope just fine. Man has a self inflated ego about our ability to both damage or fix our environment. Local sucess at cleaning up a river or slag pond, is not correlated into cleaning up or dirtying the air of an entire planet. Our Mexican neighbors to the south place more pollution into the air in ONE day than the US creates in 5 months.
