In 1939, and maybe in 1940 too, Montpelier, Metrolpolitan Body and Brantford Coach did cabovers on the Dodge truck chassis that appeared in the factory brochure. At least two of them down to the size of the one ton stepdown panel delivery. I think one of them still exists because it appears in the Robin Williams film "TOYS" as an ambulance near the beginning. In addition the Montpelier unit seems to have formed the basis for a prototype military VC Ambulance which featured in one edition of the MVPA Army Motors but I only have photocopies of that here and they wont scan.

So, there is at least one 1939 / 40 4 x 4 stepdown panel van out there already - go and find it. If you find two I'll have the second one, as the one ton panel I'm going to build with a VC drivetrain is my best gues at a 'conventional' version of the same thing.
