The fact that you have no smog equipment, probably has something to do with it. The 'book' settings are more than likely for a smog legal motor.
The vacuum method gives you the most accurate setting for power and sometimes fuel economy, because it is a more efficient reading of what is actually happenning with your fuel and air mixture. You may have inadvertantly adjusted it correctly by retarding the motor the 5 degrees, because sometimes vacuum timing is too far advanced and makes the motor hard to start. However if it runs and starts better at 15 degrees, leave it there and see how your performance compares to the 10 degree setting.
Using a vacuum gauge to adjust your timing is the way to go. It gives you much more information about your engines internal condition than a timing light and it compensates for motor improvements such as headers, cam and intake manifold add-ons.
