I did some research on different cables...even synthetics?

Proper design calls for about 30:1 ratio of pullet diameter to cable diameter for MAXIMUM life. Lesser ratio for more, finer, strands. Obviously, Dodge made a compromise, possibly based on "A smaller spool will do mild damage compared to the kinks caused by field use". Like the 'diameter' of our 'fairlead' front bumpers when off-angle recoverys are done, like the 'diameter'of the debis betweeen winch and subject, like soldier one tying a knot instead of using a chain, like the abrasion done by the dirt and mud inherent to our ambient setting. Or what is the effective 'diameter' of one wrap of cable crossing another? I think it's 1:1 ?

I'd guess the 'normal abuse' far exceeds the damage done by running 1/2" cable on our spools, but you mileage may vary.

I found very little discussions on drawbacks of synthetics. But many come with a protective sleeve on them, I'd guess they are more sensitive to abrasion/ cutting than wire. Probably a good idea to keep a cover on them, keep it clean like a climbing rope, also protect from UV.
