Something else to keep in mind: Not sure if this is the same on everyone else's engines or not, but on my engine, I found out that the clearance changes as I spin the lifter in its bore. It's the same for all 12 lifters. I suspect it's something to do with the way the lifters are machined, to cause them to rotate, in order to spread out the wear evenly on lifter surface. As a by-product, though, this machining moves the lifter up and down ever so slightly as it spins. I thought this kind of action was caused by slightly sloping the cam lobes, though.

Anyway, I spin the lifters to 4 or 5 positions in their bores, checking the clearance at each position with my feeler gage, until I know that the smallest clearance is at the desired value. And I usually add an extra 0.001" clearance to what the factory specs call for, at least on the exhaust valves, just to make sure the valves don't get burned.

Just my two cents.

Matt
