I saw your responses to my responses from the last forum - regarding the differential case work that you are doing.

First, I'm not a professional, so don't send your differentials to me (unless you want me to hold them for "safe keeping," ha, ha!). I would recommend that you send them to Bob Stahl at Veteran Vehicles in Massachussetts. I've been told a number of times that he is very good at this job, and he does install the Lock Rites, as well. He'll do the whole job, if you want. I've also been told that he uses bronze washers/spacers behind the spider gears/side gears inside the case, instead of the old fashioned fiber washers. Supposedly the bronze ones are much more durable.

To answer your next question, I think the cap unscrews counter-clockwise, but I will try to remember to look in my manual tonight to confirm. Also, I wouldn't recommend using a pipe wrench to loosen the cap. First of all, unless you take precautions, you will gouge up the surface where the carrier bearing presses on. This is not necessarily such a huge deal, but if you put a good gouge in the radius at the base of the journal, it weakens the part. (Sorry, I just had to throw that in there, because I'm a fatigue engineer for a living...) Second, I'm not sure that a pipe wrench will get you enough leverage without slipping - I could be wrong, though. I messed around with trying to loosen my caps various ways, even using a cheesy homemade wrench built by a shop, with no success. Finally, after the machinists at the engineering machine shop in college built a REAL wrench, the cap came right off.

You said that you don't think there any pins in the case anymore, but just some empty holes. Those holes could be from a previous rebuild, so make sure that there aren't any pins that are somehow hard to spot (blending in with the surrounding material, covered with grease, etc.).

Or, like I say, you can just send it all to Bob Stahl, and he'll do it all - for a price, of course, but it might be worth it. He is listed in the "Links" section on the "Home" page of the site you are in now.

Good luck!

Matt
