I agree, and if I don't have air available, I'll put grease on the tap to try to catch most of the grit and shavings, and clean it off between holes. However, sometimes holes are tapped for a tighter clearance than a standard tap provides. If the tap looks like it's actually cutting metal, I don't run a tap in because it would just weaken the hole and it's no fun at all to strip out a head bolt hole in an engine block.
