just loosen a tube fitting and pull down on the pedal, then tighten fitting and release pedal. Wasteful of fluid, but one man can do it without helper or special tools. Bench bleeding is a neater, easier way to do business, especially with return lines run into reservoir. But it isn't a neccessity or any different from just pumping it for a while- sometimes a long while.....
