It's not the outside of the filter insert that I'm concerned about. The outside surface of the filter fits very snugly against the inside surface of the canister, but the center of the filter does not seem to fit as tightly around the canister's center tube as the previous one did. The previous one had rubber rings that slid over the canister's center tube, making a tight fit and forcing the oil to go through the filter material and then into the tube - the way it ought to be. But the new filters don't have these rubber rings. It seems like the oil can just flow over the top of the filter and head straight for the center tube, where it will go back into the engine, unfiltered.
As for the lid seal leaks, maybe the lid or the canister housing is warped or otherwise not fitting correctly, as Vaughn suggested.
