I feel stupid, but I found the problem. When I refilled the oil, I put not quite exactly 6 quarts of oil in. I poured some ofit in the filter reservoir, and the rest in the crankcase. After my little experience with the gauge, I checked the oil level. I was a little over a quart low. I put one more quart in, and that brought the oil level right up to the full mark. I fired the truck up again, and the gauge immediately started working.
The data plate says the crankcase hold six quarts of oil, but it fails to mention the quart that the oil filter absorbs.
