Hitting a curb or something can pinch the tube within the tire. They don't have much abrasive resistance, running on low pressure puts things at risk. Tubes are a wimpy rubber, whose only job is to hold air in. Driving habits have a lot to do with tire life, one of my brothers was always having blowouts, but he cut every driveway and hit the curb.
