PAUL, i called it a fuel pump. it was actually a filter/screen on the pick up tube. i also have a 83 ramcharger, i rebuilt the motor in ,put a brand new fuel pump on it ,bought it from advance auto parts,and i ended up having a strong knocking, in my motor, and when i checked my oil, it smelled like gas. so i replaced the fuel pump, and rebuilt my holley carb, had a bad power valve in it,(had a factory blow out protector in it to) and when i did all that it solved my problems. can you believe brand new fuel pump was bad?? go to a dealer as a last resort, around here they charge you a body, not a arm, and a leg good luck
