Diane and I took a trip this weekend to the BLue Ridge Parkway and Bedford, Va. which was nearby.
Bedford had the highest per capita casualty rate of any community in the U.S. during D-Day (and WW-2?). That is why they put the monument there. Out of 23 men, 19 were killed. As seen in the movie Saving Private Ryan, the first boats in on the beach at Omaha were mainly from Company A, which was heavily represented by Bedford.
The monument is very impressive and worth a visit to anyone when you are in the east. Veterans volunteer there as guides. One visitor left his Purple Heart on a sculpture. They even have recreated the sound of bullets hitting the water and the appearance of the bunkers, etc.
