best advice is to visit your local paint supply place. Let them look at the paint if possible. They should be able to look at the paint and recommend the right grit of sandpaper to use to make it smooth. I highly recommend the Meguiars brand of paper "unigrit" and they will know what type of buffing compunds to use etc.
Also ask if they have the Meguiars video you can borrow that shows what and what not to do when buffing out a paint job. It is about 20 minutes long after you fast forward through all the advertising. The video is alot better than trying to read a web page about how to do it.
Also be prepared to buy an orbital buffer to apply the shining up material with.
