I used a 1" solid shaft. As it was inserted into bed, heat was applied to remove dents and any other flaws in rails. When rails got to desirable shape I removed the shaft. If done right the shaft should slide out easily. I had a slight bow in my bed and it came out pretty well. You can leave it in if you would like, but with current steel prices and the weight I suggest removing. Mark
