Well said, Gordon. There were many different nationalities that paid the ultimate sacrifice at Normandy.
The 29th Infantry Division, 116th Regiment of the U.S. Army unfortunately (for them) drew the beach at Omaha as their point to come ashore.
There is a small town here, Bedford, Virginia. It is unique in a somber way. 60% of the guys in Company A, in the first boats that came ashore, were men from that town. As a result the town was pretty much wiped out. Of the 200 plus men in company A, only a couple dozen survived.
There is a relatively new D-Day Memorial in Bedford that I plan on seeing in the next few years. It is about a 4 1/2 hour drive from me.
