Is my guess Robert.
I'd get some starting fluid & when you have the engine running, spray the SF at the intake manifold right where it meets the head & also at the base of the carb where it's bolted to the manifold. If your engine revs up, you've got a bad intake-head seal or carb mounting gasket or they are loose. Check to be sure the vacuum line is not broken going to your wipers or a brake booster. The symptoms you describe indicate either a vacuum leak or a plugged jet in the carb from dirt or bad gas.
Option two is go buy a vacuum gauge & check how much vacuum your engine builds if you don't like my fancy starting fluid method!
That's my bet!
