In Memoriam
The US soldiers, some 140,000 strong, are in a far away land. Some of their equipment is not as good as the press thinks it should be. Some of their vehicles lack the specific protection that the press thinks they should have. The press thinks that they are short of ammunition. Their supply routes are not fully secure and a few troops are captured or killed when the convoys get lost. Paratroopers get lost behind enemy lines. The soldiers suffer terrible losses, the left grumbles that the whole endeavor is a mistake and while they say that they ‘support’ our troops, they whine about the troops mission. The generals are second guessed by the ‘experts’. It is said that poor leadership and political appointments will doom the mission to failure. There are complaints about the timetable, the weather, just about anything that can be complained about. The reality is that in less than 24 hours, over soldiers 3,000 die. Wait,…the toll in Iraq is not that high? That’s because I’m not talking about Iraq, in less than a week, we will observe the 60th anniversary of D-Day. There are surprising similarities to then and now, not the least of which is the importance of our mission in the overall future of our society.
On this Memorial Day this is one veteran who reflects in awe on the sacrifice that young Americans have made and continue to make to this day. We didn’t always have a grasp of the ‘big picture’ but we served our country and some of us fell, never to rise again. Memorial Day is to honor them, their courage, their fear, their service and their ultimate sacrifice. A sacrifice that allows the survivors to sit safely at home reading these words this morning.
Our freedoms are often taken for granted, and sometimes even distained by those who would dishonor our military and their sacrifices, sacrifices made so that those of us who didn’t have the honor of serving, can live fat, lazy, cushy lives and go about our business with little worry and care about how our nation came to be and how our nation survives to this day.
Today we find ourselves at war yet again, but because our military is so magnificent, we at home have little fear or worries and in fact much of the nation has already forgotten the horror of 9-11. Make no mistake, we are at war and we will again be attacked before we once again prevail. We will prevail because for every leftist, anti-establishment, blame America first, citizen that lives in this country, there are 10 young Americans willing to serve and die to defend this great experiment.
To the fallen of all past and present wars I give my thanks and my unyielding gratitude. Because of your service and sacrifice we are free, proud and unafraid.
God Bless you fallen soldier, wherever you rest, your country owes you more than you ever knew.
