Lock Right break-in procedure?

I took my permanently-locked Lock Right apart after about 300 miles of use and found all the pins and springs mangled. It never saw any severe duty, so I'm not sure what caused the carnage.

I have the differential case back together with new pins and springs. I am now bench testing it (a process dreadfully omitted from the installation manual). I can get it to ratchet only if I cheat by pushing the Lock Right in with a screwdriver through holes in the differential case. I think everything is put together correctly. It just takes a lot of force to unseat those new side gears from the Lock Right drivers. I wish there was a good break-in procedure to reassure me I won’t break the pins again when I put it on the road. Any advice is welcome.

If I get through this successfully, I intend to write up instructions that might help others. I have some photos posted at http://imageevent.com/shaggy/lockright
