I've tried those kinds of services before. They can only tell very little, as they only search records that are easily accessible by computer. They're good for newer cars, as the registration info is still available. A good look at the vehicle's condition, as well as consulting with enthusiasts who are familiar with them, is much more reliable on the older vehicles.
I have a car that wasn't quite legal here in the '70s, yet it's legally registered, and a friend of mine in the CIA wasn't able to find out more than I was from looking at the previous title.
DMV recordkeeping isn't that great, I guess.
