To continue from the last forum on this WC resurection: I went ahead and installed a alternator (GM 2-wire) in place of the old generator that was not working. The installation was a snap! Just a little know-how and fabrication is all it took. I used the original bracket on the bottom, the mounting post on the alternator had to have about 3/8 ground off and the pulleys lined up perefectly. The alternator has to mount on the front of the bracket instead of on the inside as the generator is. I used big flat washers to try and reduce vibration but it's still there a little. I used a GM 350 tensioning bracket on top that I had to cut and drill a hole to mount on the water pump. (Be aware that when you pull that water pump bolt out coolant goes everywhere. This led to me looking like a fool with my finger over the hole yelling for my wife to find the bolt that I dropped. Murphy's Law you know!) I ran a wire to the Batt. ant one direct to the ammeter, and one to the raido filter where the coil wire attaches. All seems to work fine and I'm pushing 14.5 volts. I am not getting any reading on the ammeter while it's running though. It is showing 14 when the ignition is turned on. Am I missing something? I thought the ammeter would read charging volts also. Tell me what you think.
