A couple of years ago I bought a '72W300 with the idea of putting a big block 400 in it.It originally came with a 318.The motor mounts are actually futher ahead on the 318 than the 400.I used the mounting brackets & pads off the 400.I had to fabricate the brackets using 3/8 plate.I welded these brackets directly behind the existing mounts for the 318.Be sure to drill a hole for the motor mount stud, plus a counter sink hole for the motor mount pad itself before welding.Seems like the distance between original holes[318] and the new fabricated bracket[400] was around 2-2 1/2 inches. The big block bolted up just fine to the original bell housing.Don't forget to leave room for oil pan clearance.Hope this will help.
