If you have land, and a family background in making "shine", you can grow your own fuel. I still have an old Harrowsmith magazine from the early 80's that focuses on "The New Moonshiners". The one fellow had a small acrage where he grew sugar beets that were processed into fuel on site. It was run in a slightly modified Volvo (more compression to take advantage of the anti knock quality) and the total cost per mile was within 2 cents of the gasoline cost At That Time. It should be quite viable at the present gas prices.
Biodiesel can also be made at home by processing any suitable vegitable oil, or even used comercial cooking oils. ("May I take your order sir?" Yes, a burger and fries fo me, and yesterday's cleanup slops for the truck please" ) Check out the Veggie Avenger! site for more info.

Side note:
seems to me that when this fuel price thing happened back in the 70's, vehicles started to shrink, and fuel milage became a major purchase factor. If prices stay high, could SUVs be headed the way of the NP203 Full Time transfer case??? J.V.L.
