Joe, you were doing so good with your above answer but this is backwards. The 4.09F/4.10B was correct, but the 4.89 went in front, the 4.88 in the rear. So while I subscribe to the lash/wind-up theory, this would put the theory into question. I am leaning towards the carrier size difference as the reason that Dana did this with the 44/60 combo in the W100 and W200's. W300 and WM300 had the same axles front and rear and do not have this ratio mix set-up.
