ratio question

Maybe someone who won the shop class award can tell me, (who won the math prize), how there can be differentials with a "4.89" ratio, and others with a "4.88" ratio. Is it just a case of two engineers using two different rounding methods, or are there really two different ratios? Thank you, all-seeing and all-knowing.
