USR makes the best modems. There hasnt been any real improvement in modems for years now. The modem will sync up at the speed according to the telephone line conditions. Going to a USB port isnt gonna help you. In the old days you could adjust data compression and error correction and sometimes get better speeds. Certain chipsets for desired more then other chipsets. 550 Uarts were better for serial ports then 450's. Some modems had the rockwell chip sets that were not as good as others. V32,V32bis,56k,56kflex,HST, HST Dual Standard......ahhh the good old days!

Things you knew and steered away from. I dont think it really matters much anymore.

Its probably about the best its gonna get with the setup you got. Out in the sticks you probably dont have real good wiring down the roads and what the phone co said about going thru switch's doesnt help either. And it may not be your modem but your internet providers modems on his end. And I doubt with broadband as hot as it is any ISP is gonna do any upgrades in the modem department for dial up.

I am surprised they do not have wireless broadband out in your parts Paul. They are putting up towers on grain elevators in Kansas here and then you put up an antenna on the house and run a coax down and you have broadband. Works slick and is fast! My friend in the country has that setup. Not anymore expensive then DSL or Cable Tv broadband. They got to have it there because Kansas is always last to get anything new in the technology department.
