Weight distributing hitches

I am hearing differing opinions about how to tension the arms on a weight distributing hitch. How much tension should they have? On mine, its screwy, on one side, I leave 3 links of chain and the other one 4 links, but the pressure to lock them is about the same. Should the # of links always be the same side to side? I have also heard you should measure how much your truck sags when you hook on the trailer, then jack it back up the amount it sagged and then tension the arms. So, whats the REAL story?
