I used Marine spare varnish on mine , I put senen coats and sanded in between coats. I built a jig to do mine , I cut a coupl 2x4s an inch longer than the wood and spaced them out with wise with an inch in netween them. then I drilled holes in the upper and lower boards of the jig frame. Then I drilled a 1/4 inch hole in the center of the endof the bed boards ,then I ran screws thru the frame into the boards. I stood the whole thing up and fastened it to my work bench , when I did one side I would rotate the boards and do the back side. That way you can do both sides at once cut your time in half .Then just put some in the 1/4 inch holes to seal them, it looks great and seals.I have a picture if you want I just dont know how to post here so email me and I will send it to you.
