John I used Minwax Clear Shield as they recomended it as their best product. I put on 3 coats with a good rubbing of 0000 steel wool between coats for a very nice finish. Of course if you a not going for a show truck finish you can always paint your wood but the Minwax will still give a servicable finish. Just make sure you break the edges of the wood with a little sanding to make whatever you use last longer. Also coat the ends and all sides eqaully.
