Is it in front of the sending unit?

I can see the sending unit clearly through the hole in the rear floorboard. There is no vent hole in that assembly. There is a small divot in the top of the tank a just forward of the sending unit. The divot has a plate partially covering it. Is that the vent? I can't tell what's under that plate, but there does appear to be plenty of crud and an opportunity for mud to get caked under there.

I tried putting a little air pressure on the tank last night-just enough to barely bulge the tank. I didn't want to blow anything apart. It wasn't enough to clear the vent.

And, yes it made it out of every mud hole without assistance.
