He has a backfiring, sputtering engine, that is a classic case of mis-wiring, bad condenser, backwards or 180 degree off firing order. Let's have him go back through the basics before we start him off on a wild goose chase! The post above with the firing order, rotation and sequence was very helpful, let's stay focused on the symptoms, if all else is verified and checked out then other items can be checked in order. The object is to become proficient at trouble shooting, not proficient at parts replacing. = )
Unfortunately most modern mechanics are simply parts replacers, not true mechanics.
Granted sometimes a wire gets crossed when putting things back together and that will damage a previously good component.
