OK, let's start over a little bit and I'll clean up my old school terminology. You have a one piece flywheel (actually two pieces, as the teeth are a separate, pressed part of the flywheel), a clutch housing or cover (backing plate) and the clutch disc or pressure plate. (diaphragm)
First, let's determine what noise you hear. Is the clutch chattering, grabbing, slipping or rattling? Squeaking or whirling? Grinding?
One symptom you mention is a heavy stiff pedal. That is caused by the following, Improper adjustment, dry or scored linkage parts, dry or scored pedal hub, pedal interferance with the floorboard, dry pivot ball or fork pivots.
All of the conditions mentioned (grinding, chattering, etc. AND the stiff pedal have poor adjustment in common) start there, remove the dust cover so you can see inside, and try to give me a discription of what the clutch is doing.
