this is simular to a Willys P/u drag link set up, I believe the picture is correct on set up , on one end the compression plug is putting presure on the spring, and on the other end the compression plug is putting pressure on the socket. The important thing is assembly is followed to the "T", after assembly grease, and make sure the compression plug is tightned, and the wire is installed to prevent back out.
If you assemble both ends the same you loose the "shock damping" effect . If you continue to experence the ball dislocating , a standard rebuild of the ends may not be enough, the tube sockets may be to worn and the tube needs replacing.
