The way I do it, it takes two people. I hook the cable to a tree, post or another truck with the truck you are spooling the cable onto at a slight downgrade. I have a friend get in the truck to steer it. With the engine a little above idle I have him start turning the drum on the winch. With the truck at a slight down grade, this puts the necessary tention on the cable and at the same time you can direct him which way to steer the truck if needed to keep the cable going on correctly.
If you need help, I live in Winters and drive thru Fairfield to and from work five days a week. As long as it's Fairfield, CA. and not Iowa. :-)
