I do not like to be told what to do as most people. I wear seat belts and wear a helmet. My choice. I put seat belts in all my trucks. Basic saftey items in some respect should be mandated. Look at the improvements in cars over the last 40 or so years. They are built to help you survive.
The problems with helmets and seat belts is that they save lives and reduce injuries. The Government has an interest in this as most people are not protected with sufficient long term insurance and the government ends up taking care of them often for life. I can see how they want to reduce their exposure to these high costs. Manditory seat belt laws are probably one of the most practical and effective laws that the government has made. Yes it is an intrusion in sume respects but some of those morons out there need a wack on the side of the head to protect themselves and their families.
Following up with Mopar Norm's comment on traffic deaths, the number of traffic deaths of under 7 year old kids is dropping quite nicely. Why? Car seats. Car seats that are getting better all the time.
